From 9 to 12 December 2021, the International Eucharistic Congress was held at Archdiocese of Kigali for the first time in Rwanda Catholic Church history.

International Eucharistic Congress in Rwanda celebrated for four days in various parishes of  Archdiocese of Kigali   such as   Regina Pacis Remera Parish, Sainte Famille Parish,  Saint Chrles Lwanga Nyamirambo Parish and Saint Michael Cathedral Parish.

The first day of Congress was preceded by a morning prayer led by Antoine Cardinal KAMBANDA, Archbishop of Kigali. He recalled the place of the Psalms in the Liturgy and thanked the Liturgical Commission for translating a prayer book (Brevial) into Kinyarwanda.

 The Bishop of Ruhengeri Diocese, Mgr Vicent Harorimana, who represents the Rwanda Bishops Conference at the International Eucharistic Congress, thanked God for the gift gives to Catholic Church in Rwanda that was represented at the 52nd International Congress in Budapest, Hungary.

“The Eucharist unites the brethren and gives us a reformation in faith. It gives us a better understanding of our faith, especially Jesus in the sacrament of the Eucharist, the Eucharist in the mission of the Church and in the life of Christians. ” He said

During the celebration, there were testimonies of various people including, priests, brothers, sisters and christians who met Jesus in the holly sacrament of the Eucharist.

In his testimony on the third day of Congress,  Father Eugene Niyonzima testified that in his weakness he drew on the knowledge and love of the Eucharist. « The Eucharist glorifies me as a pillar of heaven, » he said. He added that the beloved of the Eucharist, Jesus comes from the heart full of love, true love, and salvation.

In that day, there was also a procession of the Holy Sacrament was held from the parish of Saint Charles Lwanga Nyamirambo to Saint Michael’s Cathedral parish.

In his message: The Eucharist , a source of Life, Compassion and Reconciliation given by Mgr. Smaragde MBONYINTEGE, Bishop of Kabgayi Diocese , reminding the public  that Jesus wanted to approach them  with his Body and Blood in the Eucharist.

Mgr. INJE HWANG, the Secretary in the Nuncio Apostolic Office in Rwanda, expressed the Pope’s desire and said that love of Christ in the Eucharist be extended to all but in particular Rwandans. “I wish the power of love would spread to this beautiful country of a thousand mountains,” he added.

Despite the fact that the International Eucharistic Congress celebrated in Rwanda while it was facing the covid-19 pandemic, the participants of the Congress were pleased with what happened, even if it was the first time. International Eucharistic Congress on national level celebrated with the recognition of the theme: Eucharist, a Source of Life, Compassion and Reconciliation.   Globally, the 52nd Eucharistic Congress was celebrated with the theme “All my springs are in You » (Ps, 87,7).
